DIY Project - Copper Magazine Rack

I am so excited about this DIY project! It's one of my favourite DIY pieces I've ever made, and looks so amazing in our living room.

Copper is a stunning material to work with - it exudes a sleek, polished and classy style...yet also has a cool industrial look to it. You've probably noticed it's popping up everywhere at the moment - copper is sooooooo on trend right now!  But the problem is, you either pay through the roof for genuine copper furnishings, or you end up with cheap knock offs which look great from afar but just don't match the genuine thing up close.

So I thought it was time to get amongst this copper craze, and see if I could DIY some copper magic - and I am pretty damn happy with the outcome!  This project uses copper tube and elbows to create the frame - with glue to keep it nice and sturdy.

For the fabric frame, I gave a lot of thought (and testing) to come up with a solution that didn't require a sewing machine (I'm not that in to sewing and didn't want you to need to be either). And I wanted to add a cool printed fabric look, without forking out on expensive modern upholstery fabric. Luckily I found some cool vinyl fabric that gives a leathery look, and decals are used to create a stunning pattern (which gives you the chance to get creative too).

So you can pair the sleek copper frame with monochrome or marble goodness, and you'll have a scandi style piece that is going to look amazing in your home.

If this project is your type of thing, you'll be pleased to know I've put together everything you need to create one for your home. In my shop you'll find the DIY Kit here, where you can choose the colour fabric and decals you love. Your kit will also come with a printed instruction sheet with step by step guidance, from putting together the frame to creating the fabric hammock.

Enjoy, I just know you are going to be stoked with the results! xx

PS - here are some tips for how to clean your copper frame with ingredients you might have in your home pantry:

  • Lemon and Salt: Squeeze the lemon juice from one lemon and add salt to form a paste. Rub the paste over your copper with a soft cloth. Rinse off with warm water and polish.

  • Vinegar and Salt: Pour vinegar and salt over the copper. Rub in and keep rubbing until the tarnish removes. Rinse off and polish with a clean, dry cloth.

  • Lemon Juice and Baking Soda: Combine a few tablespoons of lemon juice with 1 tablespoon of baking soda and rub the mixture in until the grime begins to come off. Then polish off with a clean cloth.
